WooCommerce import error: "Sorry, you are not allowed to upload this file type."

What it means: This message comes from WordPress, not WooCommerce. WooCommerce tells WordPress to accept only .csv and .txt files, and WordPress also checks that the file's content matches its name. A file that is not really a CSV, or whose name does not end in .csv or .txt, is refused. Older WordPress versions showed the same refusal as "Sorry, this file type is not permitted for security reasons."

WooCommerce product import

The product CSV you are about to import into WooCommerce (Products, Import), or the one that just failed.

Your file stays on this device

It is read and converted by this page, inside your browser. Nothing from the file is uploaded, and the tool keeps working offline once the page has loaded.

How to fix it

  1. Save the file again as CSV from your spreadsheet program, so the name ends in .csv and the content is plain text.
  2. If the file came from another platform as .xlsx, open it and save as CSV; do not just rename it.
  3. If a correct .csv file is still refused, a security plugin or your host may be blocking CSV uploads; ask them, or use "Show advanced options" to import a file already on the server.

Example

A file with this problem (named products.numbers)

Name,SKU,Regular price
Mug,MUG-1,12.00

What the checker says about it

  • The file is called "products.numbers". WooCommerce only accepts .csv and .txt files. On a normal upload WordPress refuses it with "Sorry, you are not allowed to upload this file type."; with a file path on the server WooCommerce says "Invalid file type. The importer supports CSV and TXT file formats." Save or download it as CSV first.

Once the listed rows are fixed, check the file again; the checker also looks for the other problems in WooCommerce's import code, so you do not trade one error for the next.
